After agreeing to a verbal contract with Chris Blackwell, the head of Island Records, the Wailers recorded, or in many cases re-recorded, an album that has served as Reggae 101 for millions of novices. While the harmonies of Marley, Tosh and Livingston are rarely less than fabulous, equal credit goes to the steady-as-granite rhythm section of brothers Carlie and Aston “Family Man” Barrett, whom Marley stole from Lee Perry. Keyboardist John “Rabbit” Bundrick — from Marley labelmates Free — provides assistance.

With “Exodus” and “Guiltiness,” Marley reaches an angrily trenchant peak, infuriated by the events of December 3, 1976, when armed men broke into his Kingston, Jamaica, home and shot him in the chest and arm. On “So Much Things to Say,” Marley criticizes “spiritual wickedness in high places,” a none-too-subtle allusion to Jamaica’s corrupt ruling class. Fans of Marley’s tender love songs may like “Three Little Birds,” though the less-than-faithful musician wrote it not for his wife, Rita, but for girlfriend Cindy Breakspeare, named Miss World 1976.

Light on love songs and heavy on political material such as “Zimbabwe,” “Babylon System,” “So Much Trouble in the World” and “Africa Unite,” Survival sounds like the work of someone running out of time, even though Marley hadn’t yet been diagnosed with the cancer that killed him. The theme of the album, oppression, even carries over to the cover art and inner sleeve, which reproduce stowage maps of slave ships. “Ambush in the Night” is another song directed at his failed assassins, nearly all of whom, according to legend, eventually met violent deaths. Sadly, so would many of the people Marley worked with, including Peter Tosh, who was murdered at his home in 1987.

It seems cold to criticize the final recordings of a dying man, but much of the material on Marley’s last proper album sounds tired and downright depressing. Concerned that its bleak vibe might be off-putting for the growing legions of Marley’s fans, Island’s Chris Blackwell asked him to write more material. Marley responded by penning his last great tune (his last tune, period): the beautiful, acoustic and uplifting “Redemption Song.”
